Thresholds

Thresholds is a psychologically charged portrait that explores the space between interiority and external presence. The figure confronts the viewer directly, while her face is articulated through a tension between cool blue shadow and warmer areas of illumination. This chromatic division disrupts conventional portraiture, transforming the face from a stable representation of identity into a site of emotional and perceptual ambiguity.

The painting’s vigorous, visible brushwork and areas of exposed or minimally worked canvas emphasize process and materiality. Dark, loosely defined passages surrounding the figure contrast with the more luminous face, creating a shifting sense of depth between figure and environment. The partially articulated clothing and background further resist a fully resolved narrative, allowing the painting to remain suspended between observation and abstraction.

The title Thresholds evokes states of transition—between light and darkness, visibility and concealment, intimacy and distance, and the conscious and subconscious.
